Bacterium Pneumosintes in Clinical Influenza in New York City in 1926
نویسنده
چکیده
The presence of Bacterium pneumosintes has been demonstrated in nasopharyngeal washings from 2 patients in a sporadic outbreak of clinical influenza in New York City in March, 1926. 2 strains of bacteria morphologically similar to Bact. pneumosintes, but differing in certain cultural characters, and 2 other anaerobic filter-passing organisms were also isolated from the 9 patients examined. The blood serum of 16 among 17 persons convalescent from clinical influenza, and of 6 among 10 supposedly normal persons, agglutinated 1 or more strains of Bact. pneumosintes.

Secretions Froni Influenza Patients
The presence in New York City during the early months of 1922 of an acute respiratory infection that, clinically, resembled more or less the epidemic influenza of the autumn and winter of 1918-19 and the spring of 1920 afforded us an opportunity to repeat and extend the studies of the nasopharyngeal secretions from influenza patients which had resulted in the isolation of Bacterium pneumosintes...

In earlier papers of this series we have reported the observation of specific antibodies against Bacterium pneumosintes in the blood serum of experimentally infected rabbits. Thus, specific agglutinins were detected after the intratracheal injection of the active agent of the nasopharyngeal secretions of influenza patients, after the intratracheal or intravenous injection of living cultures of ...
متن کاملExperimental Studies of the Nasopharyngeal Secretions from Influenza Patients
Cultivation of Bacterium pneumosintes in the collodion sac dialysate of a tissue medium produces an antigen suitable for serological tests. Injection of dialysate cultures of Bacterium pneumosintes into rabbits results in the production of antibodies demonstrable by agglutination, precipitation, complement fixation, and phagocytic reactions. Four strains of Bacterium pneumosintes, three from th...

In an earlier paper of this series 1 Bacterium pneumosintes, derived from the nasopharyngeal washings of patients in the early hours of acute epidemic influenza, was described as a minute bacilloid body of regular form, with a length about two to three times its breadth, measuring 0.15 to 0.3 .micron in the long axis. I t was stated that although longer individuals were seen occasionally, "the ...
متن کاملThe Relation of Bacterium Pneumosintes to Influenza: a Study with a Strain of the Organism Derived from the Nasopharyngeal Washings of a Case of Influenza
Nasopharyngeal washings from a case of epidemic influenza have proven capable of initiating a pathological change in rabbits and in guinea pigs characterized after an incubation period of 1 or 2 days, by some elevation of temperature, reduction in the number of circulating leucocytes, especially of the mononuclears, and by a pulmonary lesion during the period of reaction, which is distinguishab...
